Rio 2016 Olympic torch valued at $3,800

Bidding on the Rio 2016 torch that runner Vanderlei Cordeiro de Lima used to light the Olympic cauldron is at $3,760 in the Games’ official auction.
De Lima famously lost out on a gold medal in the 2004 Olympic marathon after he was accosted by a spectator in the crowd.
De Lima was held up in the struggle, denying him the win. While he still ended up with a bronze, it was scant consolation.
He was later awarded the Pierre de Coubertin medal for sportsmanship.
The auction house comments: “As he lit the Rio 2016 Olympic cauldron, Vanderlei showed the entire world that people can have struggles, stumble and even fall, but they can always get back up.
“It is a one of a kind national treasure that has been personally autographed by Vanderlei himself.”
The sale features a wealth of items used in actual events, including a selection of volleyballs, boxing gloves and other accoutrements.
A set of 16 replica relay torches is also on offer. Bidding will close on September 15.
A gold medal from the 2012 Games sold for $45,577 at RR Auction in June.
