Real Madrid has formally provided UEFA with all available evidence supporting Vinicius Junior’s complaint of racial abuse during their Champions League clash against SL Benfica, as tensions flare over the alleged incident.
During Tuesday’s first-leg knockout play-off in Lisbon, the match was paused for 10 minutes after Vinicius reported that Benfica’s Argentine forward, Gianluca Prestianni, allegedly called him a “monkey” following a goal celebration in front of home supporters. Prestianni has denied the accusation, describing it as part of a “defamation campaign.”

UEFA confirmed on Wednesday that it will investigate the claims of discriminatory behaviour, amid widespread condemnation and vocal support for Vinicius from teammates and the global football community. Real Madrid described the incidents as “unacceptable episodes of racism” and expressed appreciation for the “unanimous backing and affection” their player has received.
The case highlights the ongoing struggle against racism in European football, adding urgency to UEFA’s disciplinary procedures and the broader conversation about safeguarding players from abuse.
