Raquel Daniel’s story behind the ‘Beyond Her Odds’ show

When Raquel Kasham Daniel sits across from a woman sharing her journey on the Beyond Her Odds Show, it’s never just an interview. It’s a mirror.

She sees herself in every pause, every tremble, every moment of triumph.

Raquel knows what it means to face the odds and keep going.

At just 16, she lost her father. At 19, she buried her mother. Overnight, the teenage girl became the head of a family, caring for her three younger brothers in a world that seemed impossibly harsh. To keep them afloat, she worked as a cleaner on the streets of Lagos, scrubbed floors as a janitor, and fought to survive.

“I didn’t just grow up fast, I had to become an adult before I was ready,” she recalls. “I know what it’s like to feel the weight of the world on your shoulders when you’re barely out of childhood yourself.”

Despite the struggles, Raquel became the first in her family to go beyond high school, setting a new precedent for what was possible. That journey, of pain, persistence, and possibility, is the beating heart of the Beyond Her Odds Show, a project under the Beyond Her Odds Initiative by her organization, Beyond the Classroom Foundation (BTCF).

The show was born from one belief: If girls can hear real stories of women who have overcome hardship, they can believe they too can rise above their circumstances.

Broadcast into underserved communities, Beyond Her Odds carries voices that might otherwise remain unheard, a former house help now speaking on global stages for girls’ rights, a young mother who rebuilt her life after divorce during pregnancy, a survivor of abuse who now advocates for others, and women who have turned addiction, loss, and heartbreak into purpose.

“These are not just feel-good stories,” Raquel says. “They’re proof. Proof that the past doesn’t have to dictate the future.”

For many girls in the communities Raquel serves, access to such stories is rare. But the radio is always on. Fathers listen in workshops, mothers in kitchens, and girls huddle over small phones that catch FM signals. Through the airwaves, these women’s voices reach ears and hearts that might otherwise never hear that hope is possible.

The Beyond Her Odds Show is proudly supported by the Igniting Girls and Grassroots Organizations for Transformative and Inclusive Education (IGNITE) Consortium: comprising the International Rescue Committee (IRC), Urgent Action Fund–Africa (UAF Africa), and the René Moawad Foundation, and funded by the Agence Française de Développement (AFD).

Under Raquel’s leadership, the show is expanding beyond radio into podcasts, and YouTube. This October, she will host the Beyond Her Odds Conference and Awards, celebrating women who have gone beyond their odds to inspire others.

“For me, this isn’t just a project,” Raquel says. “It’s my life coming full circle. I know what it’s like to be a girl who feels unseen, unheard, and unsure of the future. Now, I get to put stories in her ears that tell her she can make it too.”

The Beyond Her Odds Show airs every Thursday on Eagles 102.3 FM, Abuja with digital access coming soon.
