Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has reminded foreign nationals working in the country of key steps they must take to maintain their legal status as workers.
The Canadian immigration department said possessing a valid work permit is essential for foreigners who are authorised to work in Canada.
In a recent message shared through its official social media platform, IRCC urged foreign workers to pay close attention to the conditions attached to their permits and make timely applications whenever their circumstances require changes.
The department highlighted three important actions workers should take.
1. Understand your work permit conditions
IRCC advised foreign workers to carefully review the conditions stated on their work permits and ensure they comply with them.
The conditions can specify the type of employment a worker is allowed to undertake, as well as other restrictions or requirements attached to their authorisation.
Workers are expected to remain within the terms of their permits while employed in Canada.
2. Apply for an extension before your permit expires
Foreign workers who intend to continue working in Canada should apply to extend their work permits before the existing documents expire.
IRCC recommends submitting an extension application at least 30 days before the expiry date.
Workers should therefore check the validity period on their permits and begin the renewal process early to avoid disruptions or other immigration complications.
3. Apply to change your work permit conditions when needed
Workers whose employment circumstances change may need to apply for a modification to the conditions of their work permits.
IRCC said foreign workers should ensure their permits correspond with the conditions under which they are actually authorised to work.
The reminder comes as part of the department’s effort to ensure foreign workers understand their responsibilities and maintain valid authorisation throughout their stay.
IRCC encouraged workers to regularly review their permits, comply with all listed conditions and take action well before their documents expire or their employment circumstances change.
