President Federation Cup: El-Kanemi, Wikki clash for final ticket

The race for a place in the 2026 President Federation Cup final reaches a thrilling stage on Wednesday as former champions El-Kanemi Warriors and Wikki Tourists battle in the first semi-final at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium in Katsina.

Both sides boast rich histories in Nigeria’s oldest and most prestigious domestic football competition and will be eager to move one step closer to lifting the coveted trophy once again.

El-Kanemi Warriors, who won the competition in 1991 and 1992 before adding a third title in 2024, arrive in Katsina with confidence after overcoming Krusaders FC, Akwa United, Bendel Insurance and Sokoto United on their route to the last four.

The Maiduguri-based side first claimed the trophy with a 3-2 victory over Kano Pillars in 1991 before defeating Stationery Stores 1-0 the following year. Their most recent success came two years ago when the brilliance of midfielder Nasiru Salihu inspired them to victory over Abia Warriors in the final at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos.

Wikki Tourists, meanwhile, are chasing their second Federation Cup title after their lone triumph in 1998. The Bauchi-based club defeated Plateau United on penalties following a goalless draw in Kaduna to secure that historic success.

On their way to this year’s semi-finals, Wikki Tourists eliminated Jigawa Golden Stars Jnr, former champions Bayelsa United, Kada Warriors and Flight FC.

With both clubs seeking a return to the summit of Nigerian football’s most glamorous knockout competition, an intense contest is expected in Katsina.

The second semi-final will take place at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City, where Nasarawa United face ambitious Nigeria Premier Football League side Ikorodu City.

Ikorodu City have emerged as one of the surprise packages of the competition. The Lagos-based club narrowly missed out on a continental ticket in the NPFL after finishing just behind Shooting Stars on the final day of the season.

Having suffered heartbreak at the semi-final stage last year following a penalty shootout defeat to Abakaliki FC, the club is determined to go one step further this time and secure both the Federation Cup title and a place in continental competition.

To reach the last four, Ikorodu City recorded victories over Gaa Akanbi, Jigawa Golden Stars, Enyimba FC and Barau FC.

Nasarawa United, runners-up in 2021 after losing on penalties to Bayelsa United in Benin City, will be hoping to rewrite history at the same venue.

The Solid Miners booked their semi-final place with wins over Westgate FC, Ejigbo City, Rivers United and Plateau United.

With four ambitious teams left standing, Wednesday’s semi-finals promise high drama as the battle for a place in the President Federation Cup final intensifies.
