The Kogi State Police Command said it has concluded investigation into the death of a 30-year-old teacher, Mariam Usman, and will arraign three suspects over alleged criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide.

The teacher, a staff of Brains Minds Nursery and Primary School, Ugbamaka in Olamaboro Local Government Area, died on June 25, 2026, seven days after she was allegedly assaulted by family members of a pupil she had disciplined.

According to a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Saliu Oyiza Afusat, on Wednesday, the case was reported on June 25 and detectives of the Homicide Section, State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Lokoja, swung into action.

The command said investigation established that on June 17, one Abdullahi Isiaka assaulted the deceased at her residence over the disciplinary action she took against his eleven-year-old son during school hours.

Later that same day, while the deceased was on her way to the mosque for prayers, she was again assaulted by Ramatu Isiaka Eleojo.

Further investigation revealed that on June 18, Ojonojima Mary, younger sister to Ramatu Isiaka Eleojo, went to Brains Minds Nursery and Primary School, Ugbamaka, where she also assaulted the deceased at her workplace.

Following the attacks, Usman was first treated at Grace Clinic, Ugbamaka, before she was referred to Eleojo Clinic, Okpo, for further medical attention.

She however succumbed to the injuries on June 25.

The police said a prima facie case of criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide has been established against the three suspects: Ojonojima Mary, Ramatu Isiaka Eleojo, and Abdullahi Isiaka.

The police further said the suspects have been arrested and will be arraigned before a court of competent jurisdiction for prosecution.

Kogi State Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Kankarofi commended the professionalism and diligence of the SCID detectives.

He reiterated the command’s commitment to bringing perpetrators of violent crimes to justice.

“CP Kankarofi further advised members of the public to refrain from taking the law into their own hands and to always seek lawful means of resolving grievances,” the statement said.

He also urged residents to continue providing timely and credible information to aid crime prevention.

The incident has reignited concerns over attacks on teachers over pupil discipline.

Police had earlier confirmed opening a culpable homicide probe into the matter after the teacher died a week after the assault.

Early reports indicated the suspects fled after the attack before a manhunt was launched.
