Fresh details have emerged surrounding the tragic killing of Dr Ifeanyi Ogbu, a veterinary doctor, humanitarian, and former Chairman of the Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association (NVMA), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) chapter, who was abducted and later found dead in Abuja.

Sources who confided in The Sun suggest that the incident may have been politically motivated rather than a random case of kidnapping, as earlier reported.

Multiple sources revealed that the late Ogbu, a native of Nru Nsukka in Enugu State, had previously indicated interest in contesting the FCT Council Elections under the Labour Party (LP) as Chairman of Bwari Area Council before later withdrawing his ambition.

While some close to the deceased suspect his killing could be politically linked, others insist it may still be a case of kidnapping gone wrong, given the notoriety of the area for violent abductions.

A close associate of the late Ogbu, who spoke to The Sun on condition of anonymity, dismissed the assassination theory, noting that the Kubwa–Bwari axis where Ogbu lived has become a hotspot for kidnappers in recent years.

“The area he stays is very notorious for kidnapping. A friend of mine in Spain, whose wife and children lived around there, was forced to pay $40,000 ransom last year after they were abducted and later released.

Maybe Dr Ogbu recognised one of those who once came to kidnap his family,” the source said.

However, another friend who spoke to The Sun described the deceased as “a peaceful man who couldn’t even hurt a fly” and questioned who would want to assassinate him and for what reason, fuelling the uncertainty around the motive of the killing.

The Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association, FCT chapter, has officially confirmed his death. The association’s Administrative Secretary, Joshua Katkyes, confirmed to The Sun on Sunday that the news of Dr Ogbu’s death was received on Saturday, describing the loss as “tragic and devastating.”

“That is true. We received the information yesterday,” Katkyes said.

Efforts to get official comments from the FCT Police Command proved unsuccessful, as calls and text messages to the Command’s spokesperson went unanswered as of press time.

According to reports, the incident occurred around 11:45 p.m. on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, when armed men invaded Dr Ogbu’s residence in Kungabokun, a border community between Abuja and Niger State.

He was abducted alongside his three young children, while his wife and their two-week-old baby were left behind.

Dr Ogbu’s body was discovered the following morning near the scene of the abduction, but his three children remain in the custody of the kidnappers, with no communication or ransom demand received.

Until his death, Dr Ogbu was a passionate advocate for national veterinary development. Through his foundation, the Dr Ifeanyi Ogbu Foundation, he supported orphans and underprivileged children, providing access to education and vocational training.

He had recently urged the Federal Government to create a Federal Ministry of Veterinary Medicine, citing its potential impact on national health and the economy.

Ogbu’s death has intensified growing concerns over insecurity in the FCT, particularly in satellite towns like Kubwa, Bwari, and Dutse, where kidnappings and violent attacks have surged despite repeated assurances from security agencies.

The development comes barely a week after ARISE News presenter Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu reportedly died during a robbery at her Katampe apartment, an incident that further underscores the rising wave of violent crimes in Nigeria’s capital city.

Residents are calling on the FCT Police Command and the Federal Government to take decisive steps to restore safety and order across Abuja communities.
