Police operatives in Bauchi said they have arrested 15 suspected thugs who were involved in criminal conspiracy and thuggery during the March 18 governorship and state Assembly election in the state. The police also recovered 30 dangerous weapons in various places during the period, it was gathered.
Bauchi State Commissioner of Police, Mr Aminu Alhassan said the suspected thugs were arrested welding dangerous weapons and disturbing public peace in parts of the Bauchi metropolis, including Kobi Street, Fada Roundabout and Danjuma Goje areas.
CP Alhassan said the police operatives recovered another set of 23 firearms from miscreants during arms mop up operations across the state ahead of the governorship polls.
He disclosed that the operatives conducted several operations which resulted in significant achievements and led to the recovery of several ammunition including AK47 rifles, seven local magazines firearms, one light assault rifle and six dane guns, 18 magazines, 87 rounds of live 7×62.51mm ammunition , four machetes, one knife and three military camouflage uniform.
He gave the names of the suspects as Uzaifa Abubakar, 18, Abdulmalik Hussaini, 18, Abdulmailk Sulaiman, 21, Usman Isyaku, 21, Naziru Mohammed, 18, all of Bayan NITEL area of Bauchi.
Others, according to him include, Mubarak Yahaya, 18, Alyushau Sanusi, 25, Ahmed Usman, 28, Mubarak Nasiru, 16, Idris Dauda 22 as well as one Khalifa.
One of the suspects, Uzaifa Abubakar said: “We are different groups from different local government areas in Bauchi State. My group hails from Bayan NITEL area. We were used by some politicians to disrupt the elections. We were asked to chase the people who came to vote. We were arrested in the process and the dangerous weapons which we used to attack the people were collected by the police operatives. We have confessed to them.
In another development, the Kaduna State Commissioner of Police, Mr Yekini Ayoku said on March 13, just before the governorship and state assembly elections, the command neutralized one armed bandit with his gang members who engaged with the policemen in a gun duel.
He said in their nefarious mission, the bandits had blocked Galadimawa/ Tumburku Road in Giwa Local Government Area of Kaduna State, noting that the gang escaped into the forest with bullet wounds.
He said the police recovered AK47 rifles, loaded with two rounds of live 7. 62 x 39mm ammunition from the suspects, adding that they would soon be charged to court.
