The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between with Plateau State government and Management of Nigerian Railway Corporation will enhance restoration of train services within Jos-Kuru railway corridor soon.
This remark was made recently at NRC, Lagos Headquarters, during the signing ceremony by Commissioner for Transportation, Plateau State, Mr Jatau Davou, and the NRC Managing Director, Dr Kayode Opeifa.
Davou, who represented Plateau State Governor Bar. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, expressed profound gratitude to Minister of Transportation, Senator. Sa’id Ahmed Alkali, and new NRC Managing Director, Dr. Kayode Opaifa, for their unwavering support despite numerous challenges.
“This is not just about rail transportation; it is about restoring hope and economic prosperity to our people.“ he said.
According to him, the Jos–Kuru line, a segment of the historic Kafanchan–Kuru route, will serve as a vital link between the western and eastern rail corridors and will connect local communities as well as support farmers and traders with efficient cargo movement, and ultimately drive down the cost and duration of travel within the state.
The Commissioner posited that while the service will initially operate on the existing narrow gauge, plans are underway to expand to modern standard gauge networks as part of a broader national railway modernisation programme.
In his remarks, Opeifa spoke about the importance of federal-state cooperation in infrastructure development, lauding the Plateau state government’s proactive role in restoring the once-abandoned rail tracks.
“This partnership demonstrates how government at all levels can collaborate beyond politics, to deliver tangible benefits to Nigerians
“We are not just bringing trains; we are bringing back dignity, economic empowerment, and national integration,” Opeifa declared.
He also clarified that recent reports of railway assets being stolen were misinformed adding that the coaches were not stolen but were redeployed to Plateau where they are now being rehabilitated and put to productive use
He pointed out that NRC is committed to station a dedicated business manager in Plateau to oversee operations adding that the project is expected to generate jobs, stimulate local businesses, and offer new advertising and entertainment opportunities through train services.
