Member–elect representing Pengana Constituency in Plateau State House of Assembly, on the platform of All Progressives Congress (APC), Ezekiel Afon, is dead.
Afon won his re-election into the Assembly but died few hours after he was declared winner.
The state APC Secretary, Bashir Sati, confirmed Afon’s death to Daily Sun, in Jos, the state capital, yesterday.
He said Afon took ill and was flown abroad for treatment but died yesterday.
“Yes, I was at the Collation Centre when I was called that Afon had died. He was sick and was taken out of the country for treatment but, I was told he died today (yesterday).”
Afon was elected into the House in 2015, on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) but defected to the APC where he was re-elected.
Meanwhile, less than five hours into collation of the governorship result by Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), in Kaduna, the state chapter of the PDP has rejected the results from Saturday governorship and Assembly elections; due to what it referred to as ‘doctored results.’
PDP Chairman in the state, Felix Hassan Hyet, alleged that the elections in Kaduna were marred by intimidation by security agencies, vote-buying, ballot box snatching, ballot box stuffing and laying siege to Kagarko and Sanga local government areas; thus depriving party members from witnessing counting of their votes.
Addressing newsmen in the state, yesterday, Hyet said: “I want to commend the voters for conducting themselves in civil manner, despite unnecessary interference by security agencies. There was public vote-buying in Zaria Local Government, by government officials, snatching of ballot boxes in Chikun local government area.
“The worst case was in Birnin Gwari where there was no voting, ballot boxes were snatched and returned the next day, stuffed with results. Kagarko and Sanga local government areas are currently under siege by security agencies; in an effort to change the results in favour of the ruling party.
“Results were forcibly changed in Rigasa, Igabi local government area… “Based on all these irregularities, we wil not accept any doctored results announced by INEC because we have the original results from our agents on ground.
