All eyes will be on Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman and Akor Adams when Nigeria’s Super Eagles clash with Algeria’s Desert Warriors in a blockbuster quarter-final of the 35th Africa Cup of Nations at the Grand Stade de Marrakech on Saturday.

With five African titles shared between the two continental heavyweights, NFF Media said the showdown promises drama, intensity and high stakes as both teams fight for a place in the semi-finals of what has been described as “perhaps the biggest and most glamorous AFCON tournament in the competition’s 69-year history.”

The Super Eagles arrived in Marrakech riding a wave of momentum after relocating from Fès, where they dominated their group and Round of 16 fixtures, while the Fennecs also made the journey from Rabat, having played all their earlier matches there.

Nigeria have been devastating in attack, scoring 12 goals in four matches, compared to Algeria’s eight. The Fennecs needed a dramatic stoppage-time strike to eliminate the Democratic Republic of Congo, while Nigeria swept aside Mozambique with authority.

Osimhen, Lookman and Adams have been at the heart of Nigeria’s charge. Osimhen and Lookman, who powered the Super Eagles to a runner-up finish at the last AFCON in Côte d’Ivoire, have picked up right where they left off—each netting three goals in the tournament. Lookman has also delivered five assists, underlining his growing influence.

Adding further bite to Nigeria’s attack is Akor Adams, whose first AFCON goal against Mozambique has boosted his confidence, while Paul Onuachu, scorer of Nigeria’s milestone 150th AFCON goal, remains an option capable of changing the game.

However, NFF Media warned that Algeria are never short of danger. Baghdad Bounedjah, scorer of the lone goal in the 2019 AFCON final, remains a proven big-game striker, while captain Riyad Mahrez brings experience, composure and ruthless efficiency. Midfielder Ismaël Bennacer, defender Ramy Bensebaini and DR Congo match-winner Adil Boulbina were also highlighted as major threats.

Despite the pedigree of the opposition, NFF Media said Nigeria have looked “focused, fearless and hungry,” praising the leadership of captain Wilfred Ndidi and the drive and creativity of Alex Iwobi in midfield.

Osimhen’s brace against Mozambique moved him within three goals of Nigeria’s all-time AFCON scoring record of 37, while Lookman now boasts six AFCON goals and will be eager to add to his tally under the Marrakech lights.

The winner of Saturday’s clash will advance to a mouth-watering semi-final against either Cameroon or hosts Morocco.

NFF Media also recalled the echoes of history, noting that when Morocco hosted AFCON in 1988, Nigeria edged Algeria on penalties before losing a dramatic final to Cameroon—a reminder that when these giants collide, the margins are always razor-thin.

Saturday’s battle in Marrakech, NFF Media concluded, is set to be another chapter in a rivalry rich in quality, pride and African football heritage.
