Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has facilitated the rescue of one Godstime Uwoghiren, who was reportedly poisoned in Burkina Faso to Nigeria.

Uwoghiren, 27, was said to have been poisoned in Burkina Faso by his close friends and has since been battling ill health for the past three years.

Governor Okpebholo was said to have intervened to facilitate his rescue and return to Nigeria after Uwoghiren’s case was reported to the Nigerian embassy.

Speaking to journalists yesterday in Benin City shortly after the victim arrived on wheelchair and unable to walk, Director General of the Edo State Migration Agency, Lucky Agazumah, said information about Godstime’s ordeal in Burkina Faso was received four months ago and Governor Okpebholo swung into action.

He said investigation showed Godstime was poisoned by his friends who got jealous because he bought a motorcycle, adding that Governor Okpebholo intervened to prevent Godstime from dying.

Agazumah cautioned Edo residents to guard against being lured to slavery during the yuletide season by Nigerians living fake life abroad.

“Thank Governor Monday Okpebholo who has proved to the world about humanity.

“When they reached out to Mr Governor that Mr Godstime is paralysed and cannot walk. He was poisoned allegedly for the fact that he bought a motorcycle.

“His friends were jealous and they poisoned him. One of his sisters tried to sabotage our efforts for the past four months.

“The family earlier rejected our effort to rescue him. We were told his parents were angry that he should have sent them money for them to do farm work.

“If not that Governor Okpebholo swung into action, this young man would have died and nobody will know about it”, the Edo State Migration Agency Director General said.

Mother of Godstime, Susan, told journalists that Godstime learnt how to drive truck and that he suddenly told her and his father that he was travelling abroad with a friend.

She claimed that the family did not know where he travelled to as Godstime failed to make contact with them, adding that it took serious prayer sessions from her pastor before someone called to inform the family that their son was Burkina Faso.
