…To dispense 180,000-litre PMS, 45,000-litre AGO

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited has announced plans to deploy between 50 and 70 smart, self-service filling stations across the country within the next six months.
The company made the announcement on Thursday at the commissioning of a 24-hour self-service fuel station in Abuja, with capacity to dispense 180,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) and 45,000 litres of Automotive Gas Oil (AGO).
The station, located at the headquarters of the Nigeria Immigration Service, has 16 pumps for PMS and two pumps for AGO, as part of efforts to expand technology-driven fuel retailing and improve customer experience.
Speaking at the commissioning, Executive Director, Retail Operations and Mobility, NNPC Retail Limited, Shettima Kukawa, said the project was the product of collaboration between NNPC Retail and the Nigeria Immigration Service.
He said the station was designed to operate beyond a conventional filling station, with six electric vehicle (EV) charging points, a 200kWh solar power system, automated car wash and facilities for LPG, while CNG would be added in the future.
Kukawa said the station would operate round the clock and allow customers to dispense fuel themselves through the NNPC fuel app.
“Today shows that the downstream industry is changing after the fuel deregulation and also the start-up of the Dangote Refinery. Our industry is rapidly changing, and I think that more than ever, we need to meet the needs of the Nigerian consumer and their wishes.,” he stated.
The Managing Director, NNPC Retail Limited, Hubb Stokman, said the downstream petroleum industry was undergoing significant changes following fuel deregulation and the start-up of the Dangote Refinery.
He said consumers were increasingly demanding quality products, convenience, faster service and additional offerings such as food outlets, convenience stores, car washes and alternative energy solutions.
“Today shows that the downstream industry is changing after the fuel deregulation and also the start-up of the Dangote Refinery,” Stokman said.
The Authority Chief Executive of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), Rabiu Umar said the integration of self-service fuel dispensing, EV charging and other services demonstrated the evolution of the downstream sector.
Represented by the Executive Director, Corporate Services and Administration, Dr. Mustapha Lamorde, he said, “For us in NMDPRA, we would like to match efficiency and the use of technology with safety, environmental stewardship, and also a good commitment to our environment,” Lamorde said.
Also speaking, Executive Vice President, Downstream, NNPC Limited, Dr. Mumuni Dagazau, said the company was moving beyond the traditional concept of filling stations to develop modern energy retail destinations.
Dagazau said NNPC would continue to invest in technology, explore new energy solutions and build strategic partnerships to improve service delivery.
According to him, “Our objective at NNPC is not simply to provide fuel, it is to provide reliable energy solutions and a better retail experience supported by technology and innovation.
On his part, the Comptroller-General of Nigeria Immigration Service, Kemi Nanna Nandap, commended NNPC Limited for integrating EV charging with conventional fuelling.
Represented by Saidu Daura, the Deputy Comptroller-General, Nandap said the development aligned with global trends in energy transition, climate action and smart mobility, describing it as a practical step towards a cleaner, more sustainable and technology-driven economy.
She said the shift to technologies such as electric mobility could create opportunities for investment, employment, skills transfer and industrial growth.
“Today’s commissioning goes beyond the opening of a service station. It is a statement of confidence in Nigeria’s future and a contribution to building a resilient, green, and technologically advanced nation,” she said.
Nandap called for stronger collaboration between government institutions, the private sector and other stakeholders to promote sustainable development and national progress.
She further commended the stakeholders and professionals whose contributions made the project possible, expressing hope that the facility would serve as a model for similar investments across the country.
