The House of Representatives has approved for second reading a bill to establish more Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) across the country.
The Bill sponsored by a member representing Lagos Mainland Federal Constituency, Moshood Oshun, is seeking to amend the National Primary Health Care Development Agency Act, 2004.
The proposed legislation, according to the sponsor, is intended to improve the delivery and effectiveness of primary health care in the country.
Oshun, in his lead debate, said research has shown that access to primary health services is imperative for improved well being of the people. Regardless, the lawmaker expressed dismay that some local government areas, in the country, lack PHCs
“The Bill seeks to establish at least one Primary Health Care Centre in every Local Government Area in Nigeria. Research has shown that access to primary health services is linked to better health outcomes, which is particularly important for isolated or deprived population groups that may not have the means to access these services otherwise as health is wealth.
“It is disheartening to note that some Local Government areas do not have this all-important institution, making it extremely difficult to access lifesaving medical attention, especially in times of a health emergency.”
Oshun expressed optimism that the proposed legislation, if passed into law, will enhance the most inclusive, equitable and cost-effective way to achieve Universal Health Coverage while improving the life and health of rural dwellers in the country.
