From TONY JOHN, Port Harcourt
The Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) in Rivers State have commended Mr. Erastus Awortu, Chairman, Andoni Local Government Area for deepening democracy at the grassroots, and conferred on him an award of ‘Most Workers’ Friendly Chairman.
The group commended Awortu for prioritizing peace, infrastructure and human capital development as they urged him to continue for a second tenure in office.
Chairman, Andoni chapter of NULGE, Mr. John Idante, made the group’s position known at Ngo, the council’s headquarters, yesterday, during an award presentation/solidarity visit to the LG chairman.
Idante noted that besides addressing the challenges of insecurity and underdevelopment, which bedeviled the area, the chairman has entrenched good governance and deepened the true essence of democracy in just three years in office.
He said: “The Awortu-led administration has shown us so much love and care through his robust and humane work policies which include; prompt and regular payment of workers salaries, immediate implementation of the N30,000 minimum wage for workers of the council in line with the directive of the governor (Siminialayi Fubara).”
Idante added the “immediate implementation of junior staff and health workers’ promotion, approval and payment of security overtime for beneficiaries.”
“Others were; financial support to the union, approval of death benefits for families of deceased staff, construction of more office spaces and provision of logistics.”
In his response, the Council Chairman, Erastus Awortu, commended the group for its support while also promising to put the area on the path of irreversible progress.
He said: “I want to thank you for requesting a second term opportunity for me. God has helped me thus far to fulfill the mandate graciously bestowed on me by Andoni people. I am still in office, and will remain in office by the Grace of God and by the support of the people of Andoni.
“By the time we are through, we would have succeeded in building an atmosphere for consolidation.”
