Nigerian software engineer Sike Chimezirim, also known as CeeKay Alden, has called for increased investment in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education.
Alden said Nigeria’s ability to compete in a technology-driven global economy would depend on developing the skills needed to create and advance technology.
He said, “Nigeria’s ability to compete in an increasingly technological world will depend not merely on adopting foreign technologies, but on equipping young Nigerians and Africans with the scientific knowledge, digital skills and engineering capacity to understand, create and advance technology themselves.”
He also called for greater access to digital opportunities and engineering training, saying young people should be encouraged to develop technological solutions rather than remain only consumers of technology.
Alden said technological development should also be applied to challenges in areas such as energy, healthcare and infrastructure.
He added that stronger human capital and scientific education would be necessary for African countries to develop and implement technological solutions to their challenges.
