The Presidency has welcomed the latest boost to Nigeria’s military capability following the delivery of military equipment by the United States to the Nigerian Air Force, describing the development as a demonstration of the deepening security partnership between both countries.
The equipment was delivered last weekend by a United States Air Force C-17 aircraft under a Foreign Military Sales agreement between the United States and Nigeria.
Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, drew attention to the development in a post on his verified X handle, @aonanuga1956, sharing details released by the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM).
AFRICOM described the delivery as “Partnership in action,” saying the equipment was part of an agreement aimed at further strengthening the US-Nigeria defence relationship and enhancing Nigeria-led efforts to counter terrorism and other security threats in the region.
The U.S. military command said the delivery demonstrated the growing security partnership between Washington and Abuja, particularly in the fight against terrorism and other threats confronting the region.
The latest development comes amid growing military-to-military cooperation between Nigeria and the United States, with both countries stepping up engagements aimed at improving Nigeria’s operational capabilities against terrorism and other security challenges.
The delivery therefore represents a further practical expression of the renewed security cooperation, coming at a time Nigeria is intensifying efforts to degrade terrorist groups and other violent extremist organisations threatening national and regional security.
For the Tinubu administration, the development provides another indication of strengthening international support for Nigeria’s counter-terrorism efforts and the government’s push to equip and enhance the capacity of the nation’s armed forces.
AFRICOM’s description of the delivery as “Partnership in action” underscores the strategic importance attached by both countries to their expanding defence relationship.
The equipment forms part of a Foreign Military Sales arrangement designed to deepen the U.S.-Nigeria defence partnership and support Nigeria’s efforts to confront terrorism and other security threats.
The Presidency’s positive reception of the delivery also highlights the importance the administration attaches to international security partnerships as Nigeria continues its campaign against terrorism and other forms of insecurity.
