The Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC) has called for better treatment of Nigerian shippers operating overseas, particularly in nations with strong trade relations with Nigeria.
Dr. Pius Akutah, the Executive Secretary of the NSC, made this call during a courtesy visit to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Yusuf Tuggar, in Abuja at the weekend.
During the visit, Akutah highlighted the importance of ensuring fairer treatment for Nigerian shippers in foreign markets, emphasising that the issue is especially pertinent in countries where Nigeria maintains significant trade ties.
“This visit aims to foster collaboration and deepen institutional partnerships between the NSC and the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs,” Akutah stated.
The NSC Executive Secretary called for the establishment of liaison desks at Nigerian embassies to provide support to shippers and help resolve the challenges they encounter during their international business operations.
“There is a need for improved treatment of Nigerian shippers abroad, particularly in China, where a significant portion of our trade is concentrated,” Akutah noted.
Akutah emphasised that the NSC is actively pursuing enhanced trade intelligence to better navigate international disputes and facilitate diplomatic solutions. He explained that, as a data-generating agency, the Council seeks to leverage trade intelligence to resolve global shipping disputes.
“With improved trade intelligence, the Council aims to resolve disputes through diplomatic channels, enhancing the experience of shippers worldwide,” he said.
In addition, he shared the Council’s interest in partnering with countries that have developed Blue Economy frameworks, which are crucial for the sustainable development of maritime and shipping industries.
He also sought the Minister’s support in ensuring that Nigerians are represented in key positions within critical international institutions, such as the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), and the World Customs Organization (WCO).
In his response, the Minister, Tuggar, reaffirmed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ commitment to supporting the NSC in achieving its objectives. He encouraged the Council to continue its efforts in collaborating with the Ministry to achieve clearly defined goals that will benefit Nigerian shippers and enhance the country’s standing in international trade.
