NRC pledges support for Warri-Itakpe accident victims

The Nigeria Bureau for Accident Investigation with support of Nigerian Railway Corporation has commenced priliminary investigation into remote cause of recent Warri-Itakpe train accident which left 5 people dead and 40 others injured.

According to a statement signed by permanent secretary, Federal ministry of transportation, Engr. Funsho Adeniyi the government has extended condolences to families of victims.

He said further that 25 of the injuries were classified as serious traumatic injuries adding that some injured victims have since been discharged while others are still under medical care.

He disclosed that 482 passengers including 40 crew members and support personnel were on board the train even as it has concluded contact tracing using passenger manifest and ticketing records.

The managing director of NRC Dr Kayode Opeifa in his comments said management is considering a comprehensive safety audit of its tracks while emphasis will be placed on maintenance, operational procedures and retraining.

He pledged that management will continue to support victims and their families as well as ensure transparency in the ongoing investigation into cause of the accident.

Opeifa expressed gratitude to individuals and corporate organisations that assisted in the rescue operations.
