Nigeria’s future will not be defined by chance but by the quality of leadership deliberately nurtured today, the Chartered Institute of Directors (CIoD) Nigeria, has declared, stressing that building competent, ethical and forward-thinking leaders is critical to shaping a resilient and prosperous nation.
Speaking at the third Annual General Meeting (AGM) of Young Directors Forum (YDF) of CIoD, the Chairman of the Forum, Ms. Omobola Adekola, during her acceptance speech, maintained that as business environment is changing, governance expectations are rising, risk landscapes are evolving, and the demand for principled, competent, and courageous directors has never been greater.
As a Forum established to nurture, prepare, and position the next generation of ethical, competent, and globally competitive directors, she assured that YDF would not leave any stone unturned in grooming governance-ready leaders; leaders who can effectively steer organisations and Nigeria at large through complexity, volatility, disruption, and transformation.

The three core priorities of her administration are: Membership growth and structured transition pathways, branch expansion and national inclusion, as well as strategic stakeholder engagement and capacity development. “The future of governance in our country will not shape itself; it will be shaped by those who prepare for it. We will deepen collaborations with relevant institutions and strategic stakeholders to strengthen the capacity of our members”
She added that CIoD’s Networking & Knowledge Sharing Session (NKSS) would pay attention to governance competence, risk management excellence, strategic thinking and board readiness, as well as ethical leadership and accountability.
By the end of her tenure in 2027, she envisioned a Young Directors Forum that consistently produces boardroom-ready leaders, a Forum that had become the reference point for emerging directors in Nigeria, a Forum that transitions into a new phase of influence not only within the Institute, but across corporate Nigeria and beyond.
In an address, the President & Chairman of the Governing Council of the Institute, Otunba Adetunji Oyebanji, echoed that YDF is not an adjunct to the Institute, but a strategic investment in the future of directorship in Nigeria -serving as a leadership pipeline — grooming principled, competent, and forward-thinking directors who will shape boardrooms across both the private and public sectors.

“As members of the YDF, you are expected to embody the core values of our Institute, encapsulated in the acronym IMPACT — Integrity, Meritocracy, Professionalism, Accountability, Customer-centricity, and Teamwork. These are not aspirational ideals; they are governance imperatives” he admonished.
Represented by Mrs Amina Oyagbola, First Vice President of the Institute, Oyebanji expressed optimism over the executive committee, saying “You assumed office at a time when the demands on directors have never been greater. Boards are navigating economic volatility, regulatory scrutiny, technological disruption, sustainability expectations, and heightened stakeholder activism”
CIoD President added that the quality of governance has become a defining differentiator of institutional success anywhere in the world. “Your mandate is clear: Deepen governance competence among young director, foster peer learning and cross-sector collaboration, champion ethical leadership and responsible directorship, and strengthen advocacy for sustainable and value-driven governance practices”
He urged them to embrace innovation — not only in business thinking but in member engagement, thought leadership, and digital relevance. The YDF was charged to build an intellectually rigorous Forum, professionally respected, and strategically aligned with the broader vision of the Institute.
“Let your tenure be defined by discipline in execution, clarity of purpose, and measurable impact. Leadership is not a title; it is a trust. Your effectiveness will be determined by your unity, your integrity, and your willingness to place institutional interest above personal ambition. Work as one team. Model the governance standards you advocate and be the generation that raises the bar for directorship in Nigeria.
“Let us remain united in our shared vision — to elevate the practice of directorship in Nigeria and to position this Institute as a beacon of governance excellence on the continent” he charged.
