The GIDI Company has commenced the construction of a social housing project targeted at vulnerable and displaced women, including widows, as part of efforts to provide free and dignified accommodation to people in need.
The company disclosed this in a statement on the groundbreaking and turning of the sod ceremony held on September 8, 2026, describing the initiative as part of its broader Building Africa agenda.
According to the company, the first phase of the project will provide beneficiaries with safe accommodation at no cost, with the identification of beneficiaries to be supported through collaboration with the Lagos State Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation.
GIDI said the initiative was conceived more than a year ago before progressing to physical development with the commencement of construction.
Unlike conventional corporate social responsibility projects, the company said the GIDI Social Housing Initiative was designed as a sustainable model through which a percentage of its profits and contributions linked to qualifying property transactions would be channelled towards social housing.
It said the model would enable its commercial real estate activities to contribute directly to addressing housing needs among vulnerable members of society.
The initiative, according to GIDI, will also allow clients, institutional partners and other stakeholders to participate in funding and supporting the delivery of social housing.
The company said the project reflects its broader view of real estate as not only a commercial venture but also a platform for addressing social challenges.
GIDI said with the first phase now underway, it plans to expand the initiative through additional funding, partnerships and stakeholder participation.
It expressed optimism that the model, if sustained, could provide a private-sector approach to tackling the housing challenge in Africa by linking commercial growth with measurable social impact.
