The Federal Government has announced the opening of applications for the 2027/2028 Commonwealth Scholarships for qualified Nigerian graduates seeking to pursue postgraduate studies in the United Kingdom.
The scholarship opportunity covers a one-year taught Master’s programme or doctoral studies of up to three years in UK institutions.
The announcement was contained in a notice issued by the Department of Scholarship Awards under the Federal Ministry of Education and shared by the Lagos State Scholarship Board.
The notice, signed by the Director overseeing the Office of PSE, Dr Folake Olatunji-David, on behalf of the Minister of Education, said applications would close on October 20, 2026.
For the Master’s category, applicants must hold a first degree with at least a Second Class Upper Division.
Those seeking doctoral scholarships are required to have a relevant Master’s degree, alongside at least a Second Class Lower Division in their first degree.
Applicants in both categories must have obtained admission from at least two eligible UK institutions.
Doctoral candidates are also required to submit a supporting statement from a prospective supervisor at their preferred UK institution.
The ministry listed evidence of participation in the National Youth Service Corps among the requirements for prospective applicants.
It said applications would be assessed based on three major criteria: academic merit, development impact upon completion and the quality of the proposed study plan.
“All applications will be assessed on Academic merit, Development impact on completion and Quality of Study plan,” the notice stated.
Applicants are required to register through the Electronic Application System and complete the application process online.
They must upload scanned copies of their passport photographs, academic transcripts, birth certificates and admission letters from UK institutions listed in their applications.
Completed applications must be submitted electronically no later than October 20, 2026.
After submission, applicants are expected to generate a PDF copy of their completed application, download and print a hard copy for submission at the designated interview venue.
The ministry said applicants with foreign academic certificates must provide official translations and evaluations alongside their documents.
Prospective candidates were also advised to align their proposed studies with Nigeria’s development priorities and consider how their areas of specialisation could contribute to national development.
The priority areas identified by the ministry include education, health, economic growth and the private sector, governance and conflict, climate and the environment, water and sanitation, engineering, science and technology, food and nutrition, as well as humanitarian disasters and emergencies.
The Federal Government urged applicants to ensure that their proposed programmes are relevant to Nigeria’s development needs.
It further advised prospective candidates to consult the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission for additional information on the scholarship programme, eligibility requirements and selection criteria.
