The Niger State Police Command has come out to clear the air over the incident that occured at a Muslim burial ground in Kpakungu area of Minna, the state capital where it was alleged that unidentified person was caught and set ablaze when he attempted to exhumed a dead body from a grave.

The police command in a statement in Minna on Friday by the public relation officer, SP Wasiu Abiodun said a dog and not human being was caught set ablaze when it scaled a high fence into the burial ground and attempted to exhumed a dead body a grave.

The popular graveyard is of the most heavily fortified and guarded in Minna with a high perimeter fence, making it difficult for even human beings to scale it.

The graveyard was recently given a facelift with some renovation works, including the provision of walk ways and the broke fence repaired.

However on Friday news spread to the town that a human trespasser was caught by the security guard at graveyard on suspicion of attempting to exhume a human parts and was immediately killed and set ablaze.

But Wasiu in the statement said that the incident involved a dog and not human being.

Parts of the statement reads: “The Niger State Police Command wishes to confirm that on 22nd January, 2026 at about 8.15pm, a report was received from Kpakungu burial ground. A dog trespassed through the fence into the burial ground and attempted to dig one of the graves, during this attempt, the security guard and other neighboring persons attacked the dog and it was set ablaze”.

The statement further added that “the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) Kpakungu Division led a patrol team to the scene and ensure that normalcy is restored as the situation attracted a crowd”.

He pointed out that”This is contrary to insinuation in the public that a human crossed to the burial ground to exhume human parts from the burial ground”, adding that “members of the public are urged to disregard such fabricated report to cause public unrest”.
