NIGCOMSAT boss to deliver 20th Herbert Macaulay lecture at UNN

The Managing Director of the Nigerian Satellite Communications Limited (NIGCOMSAT), Mrs Jane Nkechi Egerton-Idehen, will be the first female guest lecturer to deliver the Herbert Macaulay Memorial Lecture (HMML) at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) since the bi-annual lecture series started in 1978.

Prof. Emenike Ejiogu, Dean, Faculty of Engineering, UNN disclosed this in Nsukka on Wednesday in a statement issued at the end of the Faculty of Engineering Board meeting.

He said that the HMML lecture was established in 1978 by the faculty
to honour and preserve the memory of Herbert Macaulay, an engineer, and Nigeria’s foremost nationalist.

According to Ejiogu, prominent Nigerians such as former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Late Dr. Alex Ekwueme, former Vice President of the country. Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, President General, Ohaneze Ndigbo, Maj. Gen. Mamman Kotangora (Rtd.), former Military Administrator of Federal Capital Territory, among others.

He said that the 2024 HMML, the 20th in the series, will hold on the 3rd and 4th of May 2024 on the theme “Harnessing Practical Engineering Solutions for Sustainable Economic Development.”

The Dean announced that Mrs. Egerton-Idehen, an engineer, has chosen to speak on the topic “Championing Innovation: A Look at Digital Transformation and Economic Diversification in Nigeria,” a topic he said resonates with Nigeria’s current need.

Ejiogu outlined other side events at the lecture to include; exhibition of practical projects of staff and students of the Faculty of Engineering and interested private/public sector companies and organizations, which products and services are relevant to sustainable economic growth; alumni homecoming, and symposium.

“A major highlight of the 2024 Herbert Macaulay Memorial Lecture will be the launching of the book, Power of Den – Origins and History of the Faculty of Engineering, University of Nigeria, Nsukka (1961-2024)”, Prof Ejiogu said.

He added that the event would also be used to honour distinguished alumni and other stakeholders who have made outstanding contributions to national development through engineering like Herbert Macaulay did.
