Senator Ned Nwoko has responded to comments made by Mr. Clement Chiazor, chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Ward 8 in Aniocha North Local Government Area, describing them as a misrepresentation of his political journey.
The senator representing Delta North, had in a letter dated January 30, 2025, notified his ward in Aniocha north LGA of his decision to quit the party.
He said his resignation from the PDP is due to “deep divisions and factionalisaton within the party”.
But Chiazor labeled him a “serial political defector.”
However, in a statement signed by his media consultant, Mr. Mike Ogah, the senator defended his decision, emphasising that it was driven by ideological alignment rather than personal ambition.
“Senator Nwoko’s political journey reflects a commitment to aligning with parties that prioritise national unity, development and the welfare of Nigerians. His transitions have been based on the need to effect positive change not for selfish reasons.”
Nwoko, founding member of the PDP since 1999, noted that his departure from the party was not a hasty decision. He cited internal disunity, factionalism, and a lack of cohesion within the party as key reasons for his exit.
“His resignation from the PDP was necessitated by the party’s internal divisions, which have hindered its effectiveness and alignment with the aspirations of Nigerians.”
The senator reiterated his commitment to the people of Delta North, highlighting his legislative efforts and community projects as evidence of his dedication. He explained that his move to the APC was aimed at fostering better collaboration with stakeholders to drive development initiatives.
“Senator Nwoko remains steadfast in his commitment to improving the quality of life for his constituents. His decision to join the APC is a strategic move to work more effectively with key players at all levels.”
Ogah urged political actors, including Chiazor, to focus on constructive dialogue and unity rather than personal attacks and mischaracterizations.
“The interest of the people should come first. Senator Nwoko welcomes open and respectful discourse with all stakeholders dedicated to national progress,” the statement concluded.
Director General of the Delta State Orientation and Communication Bureau, Fred Oghenesivbe, has also insisted that Nwoko resigned from the PDP over fears that he would not secure the party’s senatorial ticket in 2027.
He described reasons stated in the lawmaker’s resignation letter as “laughable”.
“We all knew it was only a matter of time before he (Nwoko) defected. This is about the politics of 2027 and his chances of securing the ticket to run
“As of today, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori is the leader of the PDP in Delta state, and Senator Nwoko has not been aligning with the governor or working closely with PDP leaders in the state.
“So, Nwoko is somehow scared that he may not get the PDP ticket (senatorial) in 2027 because he has misrepresented our party at the national assembly.
“What I meant by he has misrepresented the party is that the issues that he raised concerning delivery of the dividends of democracy to his people are at variance with what we believe in the PDP. We believe in procedure, we believe in obeying laws,” he said.
