The acting Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu, has assured the Labour Party (LP) that the commission will look into the party’s demand for the upload of its candidates for the forthcoming Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections.
Agbamuche-Mbu gave the assurance, yesterday, in Abuja, during the quarterly consultative meeting between INEC and leaders of registered political parties in the country.
The National Publicity Secretary of the party, Obiora Ifoh, said the party’s delegation, led by its ‘factional’ National Chairman, Barrister Julius Abure, and the National Secretary, Umar Farouk Ibrahim, attended the meeting as the authentic and recognised leadership of the party.
In his remarks, Abure congratulated the INEC acting chairman on her appointment, describing her leadership as a positive step toward strengthening the nation’s democratic institutions.
He said, “Once lawyers are in the saddle of leadership, impunity and injustice are reduced or even eliminated.
“Institutions are built and democracy continues to grow.”
Abure commended INEC for obeying the court order that ‘recognised’ his leadership of the party and expressed optimism that, under Agbamuche-Mbu’s leadership, the commission would perform more credibly and constitutionally.
He, however, appealed to the INEC leadership to release the code required for the upload of Labour Party’s candidates for the FCT Area Council elections.
“The party followed due process, issued notices to INEC, conducted primaries, and submitted the list to the commission. We, therefore, urge INEC to release the code, so we can upload our candidates and participate in the ongoing campaign,” he stated.
Abure added that the party remains committed to supporting INEC in strengthening democracy and ensuring better outcomes in the 2027 general elections.
The meeting was attended by all 18 national chairmen and secretaries of political parties, as well as INEC commissioners.
