The Edo State House of Assembly has formally impeached its suspended Speaker, Blessing Agbebaku, eight days after he announced his resignation from the position.
Agbebaku, who represents Owan West Constituency I, had announced his resignation on August 17, 2026, following a period of political uncertainty within the Assembly.
However, lawmakers on Monday converted the earlier action against him into a formal impeachment, insisting that his purported resignation was never officially presented and documented before the House.
The development came after Yekini Idaiye, representing Akoko-Edo I, had been elected Speaker following Agbebaku’s removal from the leadership position.
Speaking during Monday’s plenary, Idaiye said the impeachment notice against Agbebaku had been signed by 17 members of the Assembly.
He explained that the notice was presented by the Majority Leader during the previous Monday’s sitting, adding that the House proceeded with impeachment because Agbebaku’s resignation letter had not been formally received and documented.
Idaiye stressed that Agbebaku should be regarded as having been impeached rather than having voluntarily resigned.
“This is to let the public know that the Edo State House of Assembly has formally impeached the suspended Speaker, Blessing Agbebaku,” Idaiye said.
The motion for the former Speaker’s impeachment was moved by the Majority Leader, Sunny Ojiezele, and seconded by the lawmaker representing Etsako Central, Ahmed Waziri.
Following the impeachment, Idaiye directed Agbebaku to return all government property in his possession.
The new Speaker warned that security agencies could be called in if Agbebaku failed to comply with the directive.
“And the impeached Speaker is to return all government property in his possession, and security agencies would be engaged if the former Speaker fails to comply with the directive of the House,” Idaiye added.
