Navy affirms commitment to promoting sports

The Nigerian Navy has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting sports—particularly golf—as a tool for strengthening teamwork within the armed forces and fostering stronger ties with the civilian population.

Speaking during a golf event hosted at the Dolphin Golf Club, The Flag Officer Commanding Western Naval Command Rear Admiral Abdullahi Mustapha explained that sporting activities remain a “critical component of the profession of arms,” noting that golf, in particular, helps reinforce collaboration, discipline, and camaraderie among officers.

“Sporting activities, including golf, galvanize us to work together in teams because a team is always better than an individual,” he said.

The FOC added that the Nigerian Navy has invested significantly in constructing golf courses across its bases to encourage officers to participate more actively in the sport.

According to him, the initiative aligns with the vision of the Chief of the Naval Staff, who has emphasized improved military–civil relations. He noted that the Dolphin Golf Club’s membership currently comprises between 60 and 70 per cent former military personnel, although the club remains open to the general public.

He described the 13th edition of the Golf and Tours Charity Association was a “noble course,” combining leisure with social responsibility, stressing that integrating with society and giving back through such initiatives contributes to reducing social vices and bridging the gap between the privileged and the less privileged.

“If people are looked after properly, the sense of hopelessness will reduce. That is how we lift society to the level we want it to be in due course,” he said.

Addressing expectations for the golfers participating in the competition, the officer wished them a memorable experience as they tee off.

“I want to wish them a very indelible memory as they enjoy what they do and give back to society. Godspeed onward together to all of them,” he concluded.

Major General Emmanuel Anaryu clinched the top prize at the 13th edition of the Golf & Tour tournament, securing victory after two days of competitive play and consistent performance on the course.

Introducing himself after the event, Anaryu, a member of the Golf & Tour Association, noted that he joined the group during the 8th Golf & Tour tournament and has remained an active participant ever since. He recalled winning the 8th edition in Enugu before later losing the title in Kaduna to fellow golfer Makinde.

His competitive spirit was reignited ahead of this year’s tournament. “I said to myself that for the 13th Golf & Tour, I would make sure I win,” he stated.

Anaryu, who plays on an 18 handicap, finished Day 1 with a gross score of 95 and a net score of 77. Encouraged by his caddie, who reminded him that he remained in strong contention, he entered Day 2 focused and determined.

“Yesterday, my caddie said, ‘Sir, you are still in the winning race. Just head down, focus, and you’ll play well,’” he recounted.

Day 2 saw a mix of early errors and strong recovery. He completed the front nine with a 48, but corrected earlier mistakes to produce an impressive 42 on the back nine—matching his previous day’s performance. His cumulative net score of 149 over the two-day event earned him the championship title.

Expressing delight over the victory, Anaryu credited his success in part to his caddie’s guidance. “I feel great. I give this winning also to my caddie who advised me, head down and let’s go,” he said.

Offering advice to aspiring golfers, he emphasized discipline, mastery of the game, and respect for golfing principles. “Learn the golfing, learn the rules, and play by the rules. Head down and play your game. You are not playing individually; you are playing the course,” he advised.

The 13th Golf & Tour tournament concluded with commendations for participants and organisers, marking another milestone in the association’s growing reputation in Nigeria’s golfing community.
