Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State has called for an emergency security council meeting on Monday in response to the surge in kidnappings and ethnic militia activities within the state.
Expressing deep concern over the escalation of security challenges, Governor Sule highlighted areas such as Keffi, Doma, Lafia, Awe, Obi, Keana, Karu, and Nasarawa Local Government Areas as particularly affected.
Regarding the rise in ethnic militia activities, especially by the Bassa militia group, Governor Sule revealed plans to consider banning all single ethnic group vigilante organizations in the state, including the Fulani Vigilante Group established in 2009.
He emphasized the need for a unified approach to security and expressed intentions to integrate members of such groups into existing community vigilante setups.
Acknowledging recent discussions with President Ahmed Bola Tinubu and security chiefs in Abuja, Governor Sule underscored the urgency of the situation. He outlined measures to be discussed during the meeting, including the proposed ban on single ethnic group vigilantes and strategies to restore peace and stability in affected areas.
“We will give them a period of roughly one to two weeks to return their uniforms to us so that we can ensure they are disbanded,” Governor Sule stated, emphasizing the need for compliance with government policies and fostering peace among communities.
Expressing gratitude to his Deputy, Dr. Emmanuel Akabe, for overseeing affairs during his absence for the Lesser Hajj pilgrimage, Governor Sule commended the support of traditional rulers and security agencies. He particularly lauded the efforts of security personnel in mitigating security challenges and preventing further escalation.
The Governor also addressed recent conflicts between farmers and herders, citing the Eggon and Tiv communities in Kadarko where five people were killed. He pledged to address such conflicts during the meeting and seek viable solutions to foster harmony among diverse ethnic groups.
