The Nasarawa State government has empowered fishing communities in Doma LGA with 25,000 Heterotis fingerlings to address fish shortages and boost economic activities.
Speaking at the Doma Dam on Wednesday, the Director General of the Human Capital Development Agency (HCDA), Habiba Balarabe Suleiman, said the initiative aims to revitalise fish production in the state.
“There have been concerns over fish shortages, and the government has taken this proactive step to revitalise the Doma Dam,” Suleiman stated. She added that fishing activities at the dam have been banned for six months to allow the fingerlings to mature.
The government is also exploring alternative economic activities such as trading and farming to cushion the impact of the restriction.
Commending the Deputy Governor and HCDA Chairman, Dr. Emmanuel Akabe, for his support, Suleiman noted that the intervention would directly benefit residents and improve economic growth.
The Chairman of Doma LGA, Jonathan Addra, represented by his Chief Press Secretary, Ahmed Ibrahim, urged residents to cooperate with the agency for the success of the programme.
Nasarawa State Fisheries Cooperative Chairman, Bashir Mohammed Umar, expressed optimism that the intervention would ease fish scarcity, while District Head of Ohina Angwan Agatu, Yakubu Igyageyi, appealed for food and essential supplies to support the fishing communities during the waiting period.
Daily Sun reports that the distribution of fingerlings is part of broader efforts to enhance food security and sustainable economic activities in the state.
