NANS Ogun joins NDLEA road walk to mark 2026 int’l day against drug abuse

The leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Joint Campus Council (JCC), Ogun State Axis on Thursday participated in the road walk organised by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Ogun State Command, to commemorate the United Nations International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

The NANS contingent comprised Ogun JCC Chairman, Comrade Faruq Olabode (Success), General Secretary, Comrade Michael Ojo, Assistant General Secretary, Comrade Toyyib Adepoju, and other officials of the council.

According to a statement sent to SunOnline, the awareness campaign was held across major parts of Abeokuta, Ogun State and brought together key stakeholders, including government agencies, civil society organisations, educational institutions, youth groups, and the National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS), all united in promoting a drug-free society and raising awareness about the dangers of substance abuse and illicit drug trafficking.

Speaking during the event, the Chairman of NANS JCC Ogun, Comrade Faruq Olabode Faruq reaffirmed the commitment of the student body to supporting initiatives aimed at protecting Nigerian youths from the devastating consequences of drug abuse.

He noted that substance abuse remains a significant threat to the academic excellence, moral values, mental well-being, and overall development of students across the country.

He further emphasised the need for sustained collaboration among government institutions, educational stakeholders, parents, community leaders, and youth-focused organisations in addressing the growing challenge of drug abuse.

According to him, preventive education, continuous sensitisation, and accessible rehabilitation support remain critical components in the fight against substance abuse among young people.

The chairman also urged students across tertiary institutions in the state to shun all forms of drug abuse, embrace responsible lifestyles, and become active ambassadors of the anti-drug campaign within their campuses and communities.

He stressed that the future of the nation depends largely on a healthy, productive, and value-driven youth population.

The statement noted that this year’s observance, themed “The World Drug Problem: Persisting Challenges, New Threats, and Innovative Responses,” highlighted the urgent need for innovative, collaborative, and sustainable strategies to combat the evolving dynamics of drug abuse and illicit trafficking across the globe.

NANS JCC Ogun commended the Ogun State Command of the NDLEA for its unwavering commitment, professionalism, and relentless efforts in safeguarding communities and protecting young people from the harmful effects of illicit drugs.

The association equally pledged its continued support for policies, advocacy initiatives, public enlightenment campaigns, and strategic partnerships aimed at promoting healthy living, responsible leadership, and sustainable youth development.

“As the foremost umbrella body representing Nigerian students, NANS JCC Ogun remains resolute in its commitment to championing initiatives that foster a safer, healthier, and more productive society while advancing the collective interests and welfare of students across Ogun State and beyond,” the statement further reads.
