Troops of Sector 2, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, have foiled an attempt by armed terrorists to advance towards Gandi town in Rabah Local Government Area of Sokoto State, forcing the attackers to retreat after a fierce gun battle.
The operation, conducted on Sunday, followed credible intelligence on the movement of an armed group towards the area, prompting the troops to swiftly deploy to strategic positions around the Ghandi Bridge to intercept the terrorists.
A statement on the operation said the troops engaged the terrorists upon contact with superior firepower, overpowering them and forcing them to withdraw in disarray.
It said several of the terrorists sustained gunshot wounds during the confrontation, with some attempting to escape by jumping into a nearby river.
A subsequent clearance and search operation conducted at daybreak led to the recovery of an AK-47 rifle, a loaded magazine, additional rounds of ammunition and various personal effects reportedly abandoned by the fleeing terrorists.
The military said search and mop-up operations were still ongoing in the general area to track down the fleeing suspects.
The latest operation comes barely after troops of the same formation foiled another terrorist movement in the Maikujera general area of Rabah Local Government Area, where several terrorists were reportedly neutralised and weapons, motorcycles and rustled livestock recovered.
It could be recalled that troops had acted on credible intelligence indicating that suspected terrorists were attempting to move rustled livestock through the Maikujera axis.

The troops rapidly deployed to intercept the group but encountered an attempted ambush along the route.
According to the military, the troops demonstrated tactical readiness by immediately engaging the terrorists with superior firepower, breaking through the ambush and neutralising several members of the group.
The remaining terrorists reportedly fled into the surrounding bush as troops continued the operation.
During the subsequent exploitation of the area, troops recovered AK-47 rifles, motorcycles allegedly used by the terrorists and the rustled livestock.
The military said the general Rabah and Maikujera areas remained calm and stable following the operations, adding that troops had maintained a strong presence in the area and continued routine patrols to safeguard residents.
The two operations underscore the intensified military presence and intelligence-led operations along the Rabah axis, particularly against armed groups attempting to move through the area with weapons and rustled livestock.
Troops are expected to sustain clearance, patrol and mop-up operations in the affected areas as efforts continue to prevent the terrorists from regrouping or gaining access to surrounding communities.
