Chelsea have completed the signing of Argentina international goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez from Aston Villa on a three-year contract.
The 33-year-old, who was Argentina’s goalkeeper when they won the 2022 FIFA World Cup, joins Chelsea after six seasons with Villa, where he established himself as one of the Premier League’s leading goalkeepers.
Martinez said he was delighted to join Chelsea, adding that moving to the London club was an easy decision for him and his family.
“I’m delighted to be at this football club,” Martinez said. “Coming to Chelsea, for me and my family, was an easy decision to make and I’m just over the moon, I can’t wait to get started.”
The Argentine also outlined his ambition to win trophies with Chelsea and bring his competitive mentality to the club.
“I want to be successful here. I’m someone who wants to win at everything I do and I want to bring that here to this football club because it’s a football club that wins titles, so I think it’s a good match.”
Martinez began his professional career in the youth system of Independiente before joining Arsenal in August 2010 at the age of 17. After several loan spells, he became Arsenal’s first-choice goalkeeper towards the end of the 2019/20 season and helped the club win the FA Cup.
He joined Aston Villa in September 2020 and went on to make 256 appearances for the club across six seasons, winning the UEFA Europa League in May.
At international level, Martinez made his Argentina debut in June 2021 and has since earned 67 caps. He helped the country win the Copa America in 2021 and 2024 before playing a key role in their 2022 World Cup triumph.
His performances have also earned him the Yashin Trophy as the world’s best-performing goalkeeper at the 2023 and 2024 Ballon d’Or ceremonies.
Martinez said he would bring his trademark intensity and commitment to Stamford Bridge as he begins the next chapter of his career.
“I’m all passion and I play with my heart. I will give 100 per cent every game, every training session to make the club, my teammates and the supporters proud.”
