Two suspected robbers have been beaten to death by a lynch mob in Calabar South Local Government Area of Cross River State.
The tragic incident happened on Saturday night, and their corpses were abandoned along Ekpo Abasi Street, near Yellow Duke in Calabar South.
Early Sunday morning, a crowd gathered at the scene to catch a glimpse of the corpses, which were yet to be identified, before they were evacuated by police personnel.
Sources say one of the robbers may have been a scrap metal dealer who operates within the area, but this is yet to be confirmed by the authorities.
The Cross River State Police Command, through its Public Relations Officer, ASP Eitokpah, confirmed the deaths in a statement.
The Command said preliminary findings indicate that the victims were apprehended by residents who suspected them of involvement in a robbery before they were attacked.

Police operatives who responded to the scene documented the incident and evacuated the bodies with the assistance of local government authorities. The remains have been deposited for preservation and identification, the Command stated.
ASP Eitokpah said investigations have commenced to establish the circumstances surrounding the deaths and to identify the deceased.
He added that the Command strongly condemned the act, warning residents against taking the law into their own hands.
“No individual has the right to take the law into their own hands,” the statement read. “We urge members of the public to desist from jungle justice and always hand suspected offenders over to the police or other lawful authorities for investigation and prosecution.”
Police said further details will be released as the investigation progresses.
