The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has commended the management of the Federal College of Education, Abeokuta, for transparency in the administration of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) while advocating for improved students’ welfare.
The commendation was made on Wednesday during a courtesy visit by a NANS delegation led by the Secretary General, Comrade Oladimeji Uthman, to the college management in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
According to a statement signed by Uthman, the visit was in furtherance of NANS’ commitment to fostering strategic partnerships with tertiary institutions and advancing the welfare of Nigerian students.
Uthman led the high-powered delegation that included National headquarters officials, zonal executives, Joint Campus Council representatives, and other student leaders.
The delegation was received by the Students’ Union Government and subsequently by the institution’s management team led by the Provost, Dr. Rafiu Adekola Soyele.
Uthman, who is an alumnus of the institution, applauded the provost and management for “visionary leadership, effective administrative coordination, and unwavering commitment” to sustaining the college’s legacy as one of Nigeria’s foremost colleges of education.
He specifically commended the institution for “transparency, accountability, and integrity” in handling NELFUND disbursements, noting that FCE Abeokuta was not among schools implicated in loan fund diversion.
“The institution’s handling of the scheme is exemplary,” Uthman said.

“We are satisfied that beneficiaries received their entitlements accordingly, and the management kept us adequately informed. Such transparency strengthens students’ confidence in institutional governance and the credibility of government intervention programmes,” he added.
As part of NANS’ advocacy, Uthman presented pressing demands including the rehabilitation of the SUG Secretariat, continuous renovation of hostels, and improved campus security through better access control mechanisms.
Responding, Dr. Soyele thanked NANS for the engagement and addressed the concerns raised.
He reaffirmed the college’s commitment to students’ welfare, infrastructure, security, and academic excellence.
Both sides said they reached “mutual understandings and positive resolutions” on the issues discussed.
“I am an alumnus of this citadel of learning; its advancement must remain my priority,” Soyele stated.
The provost also expressed gratitude to NANS for an Honorary Award presented to him during the NANS @45 Anniversary celebration.
Both parties pledged sustained collaboration to promote quality education, institutional development, and students’ welfare, the statement added.
Uthman stated that NANS remains resolute in its commitment to constructive dialogue, strategic advocacy, and meaningful engagement with stakeholders across the education as it continues to champion policies and initiatives that advance the aspirations of Nigerian students.
