NANS bemoans incessant attacks on security operatives

From Laide Raheem, Abeokuta

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) on Thursday expressed concern over what it described as “a disturbing trend of incessant attacks on security operatives” by armed youths or groups.

NANS said it was deeply troubling to see security personnel, especially police officers and soldiers, subjected to violence and hostility from the very people they are sworn to protect.

During a press conference in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, NANS National President, Usman Umar Barambu, and NANS National Senate President, Ekundina Elvis, said it had become imperative for Nigerians to collectively and unequivocally condemn these actions.

They noted that security operatives are dedicated individuals who have taken an oath to protect lives, property, and the rule of law; hence, attacks on them while carrying out their constitutional responsibilities must be checked by the relevant authorities.

They argued that although there have been instances where frustrations arose due to perceived or actual misconduct by some security personnel, resorting to violence is not the solution.

“Attacks on security operatives undermine the rule of law, disrupt societal harmony, and create an environment of fear and instability. These actions not only endanger the lives of the officers but also jeopardise the safety of the entire community.

“We won’t forget so quickly the killings of 17 military personnel in Delta State in March. It was reported that residents of the Okuama Community in Delta State on 14 March ambushed and murdered 17 military personnel, including the Commanding Officer of 181 Army Amphibious Battalion, two majors, one captain and 13 soldiers.

“The troops were ambushed and killed in the most gruesome way while responding to a distress call during a clash between Okuama and Okoloba communities in the south-southern state, and their weapons were also carted away.

“According to reports by various news media, no fewer than 154 military and police officers were killed by non-state actors between March 2023 and March 2024. Ninety policemen were killed while 64 military personnel also lost their lives to the activities of outlaws.

“As students and future leaders of this nation, we must advocate for constructive and peaceful avenues to address grievances. It is crucial to engage in dialogue, report misconduct through the appropriate channels, and work towards systemic reforms that can enhance the accountability and professionalism of our security forces.

“We call upon community leaders, civil society organisations, and all citizens to join us in condemning these attacks. We urge everyone to foster a spirit of cooperation and mutual respect with our security operatives. Let us remember that they are our brothers, sisters, friends, and neighbours who are fulfilling a critical role in our society,” the NANS national officers stated.

They appealed to the government and relevant authorities to investigate the root causes of tensions and take appropriate measures to address them, stressing that security operatives must be adequately trained, held accountable, and supported in their duties to restore public trust and cooperation.

“We are also using this opportunity to call on the leadership of the army and the police to caution their men against human rights abuses. We have witnessed with regret the involvement of military and police officers in civil matters such as land disputes, debt recovery and abuse of students, among others.

“NANS, under the leadership of Usman Umar Barambu, urges all Nigerians to commit to building a community where security operatives and residents coexist peacefully and work collaboratively towards a common goal – a safe, secure, and prosperous society for all. Violence is never the answer, and through unity and understanding, we can overcome these challenges,” they submitted.
