Real Madrid defender Antonio Rüdiger has announced his retirement from international football, ending his Germany career after 86 appearances.
Rüdiger made the announcement on his official X handle on Tuesday, saying he had spent time reflecting before deciding to step aside and give younger players an opportunity.
“After some time spent reflecting, the moment has come for me to end my career with the national team and clear the way for the young generation,” Rüdiger said.
The 33-year-old made his Germany debut in 2014 and became an established member of the national team during a decade in which he featured at major international tournaments.
Although Germany failed to win a major title during his final tournaments, Rüdiger described his time with the national team as a defining chapter of his career.
“Even though the big title eluded us at the last tournaments and we had to endure some painful defeats, this time was an incredibly special chapter for me one that will shape me forever,” he said.
Rüdiger thanked his teammates for the battles they shared and the friendships formed during his international career, while also acknowledging the coaching and support staff.
He specifically thanked former Germany coaches Joachim Löw, Hansi Flick and Julian Nagelsmann, as well as his former youth-team mentor Horst Hrubesch, for their influence on his career.
The defender also paid tribute to Germany supporters, highlighting the atmosphere during Euro 2024, which Germany hosted.
“And of course, to you fans: Thank you for your support especially for the unforgettable atmosphere at our home EURO 2024,” he said.
Rüdiger will now concentrate on his club career with Real Madrid after bringing his Germany journey to a close following 86 international appearances.
