Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has hailed the sacrifices of women and mothers in uplifting the society by juggling responsibilities in the home and workplace, to keep the family unit intact, grow businesses and contribute to sustainable development.

The governor, who said this in commemoration of Mothers’ Day, marked yesterday, noted that the Violence Against Persons (VAP) Prohibition Law in the state would protect mothers, women, children and other vulnerable people in society from abuse.

He said: “As we mark Mothers’ Day across the world, I join in celebrating the contribution of mothers and women to societal development. This is imperative because women have shown to be custodians of intricate strings and responsibilities that hold society together, and their masterful management of their roles have ensured we have a thriving society.

Noting that the state government is committed to the welfare of mothers, the governor said the revamp of the primary healthcare system in the state will serve mothers and women better and ensure they are able to access affordable healthcare.

Meanwhile, Rivers State governor’s wife, Eberechi Suzzette Nyesom-Wike, has urged mothers to remain hardworking towards promoting the ideals of great family life for the good of the society.

Justice Nyesom-Wike also described motherhood as the greatest and most challenging job any woman can have.

She spoke, yesterday, during a special church service to mark Mother’s Day at St Peter’s Anglican Church, Rumuepirikom, in Port Harcourt.

She said: “Being a mother is one of the greatest jobs of  womanhood. It is also one of the most challenging jobs.

“A great mother is not an idle woman. She is a woman who has prepared herself to meet up with the challenges of living.  She does not have time for gossip. She is very focused. That kind of woman is a virtuous woman.”

She called on mothers to always dress appropriately to fit different occasions, saying the society should always appreciate mothers for their contributions to the development of the state.

In her sermon, Mrs Virtue Chimela Samuel, said mothers  are vital to the development of the society and urged mothers to always remain supportive of their husbands, as they build worthy families premised on Christian values.
