The Ministry of Police Affairs and the Police Service Commission (PSC) are set to deepen collaboration to enhance recruitment, promotion, and training within the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).
Dr Anuma Ogbonnaya Nlia, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, made the call during a courtesy visit to PSC Chairman DIG Hashimu Argungu (retd) at PSC Headquarters in Jabi, Abuja.
A statement by the Ministry’s Director of Information quoted Dr Anuma: “Working together will establish transparent and merit-based systems for career progression and to address issues of misconduct fairly and effectively.”
He stressed that seamless, ethical recruitment and training processes are vital for modern policing. He also advocated joint policy development to boost NPF’s operational efficiency, accountability, and human rights compliance, alongside improving officers’ welfare and morale to maintain law and order.
Dr Anuma, introducing himself as the new Permanent Secretary, aimed to foster stronger ties: “We recognise that our mandates are intrinsically linked, and effective collaboration is paramount to achieving our shared goals within the security architecture of Nigeria.” He committed to open dialogue and mutual respect to tackle challenges and opportunities.
PSC Chairman Argungu welcomed the initiative, pledging cooperation to address pension issues for retired officers and advance police reforms: “We must work together with the Nigeria Police Force to resolve the issue of pension, police reforms, and regular consultation to put life into police reforms in line with global standards and strengthen our relationship with civil society organisations and international donors.”
