Messi makes MLS history with 100

With the 2026 FIFA World Cup just over a month away, the footballing world is reaching a fever pitch as 48 nations prepare for the largest tournament in history. While all eyes are on the final set for July 19 in New York, the sport’s most decorated icon, Lionel Messi, is making sure his form is terrifyingly sharp. At 38 years old, the Argentine maestro continues to redefine the limits of the game, most recently spearheading a 4-2 victory for Inter Miami CF over Toronto FC in Canada.

During that masterclass in Toronto, Messi was involved in three of the Herons’ four goals, netting once and providing two assists. With those contributions, he officially became the fastest player in MLS history to reach 100 goal contributions. Messi reached the century mark in just 64 matches, totaling 59 goals and 41 assists, a staggering pace that highlights his evolution from a pure scorer to the league’s ultimate playmaker.

The speed at which Messi reached this milestone is almost difficult to quantify compared to the league’s previous greats. The record was formerly held by Toronto’s own Sebastian Giovinco, who took 95 games to reach 100 goal involvements. Messi managed to shave nearly 31 games off that record, essentially rewriting the history books in two-thirds of the time it took the previous benchmark-setter.
