Indigenous downstream oil and gas company MEA Energy Trading Limited has partnered global retail technology provider Petrosoft to deploy SmartPump technology across its filling stations nationwide, in a move aimed at automating operations and improving customer service delivery in Nigeria’s downstream petroleum sector.
The SmartPump solution, developed by Petrosoft, provides end-to-end automation for fuel retail outlets, offering real-time data visibility, inventory control and operational oversight for downstream energy companies.

MEA Energy, a Nigeria-based company and subsidiary of a United Arab Emirates-based commodities and trade finance consortium, said it has strong confidence in the technology to support its rapidly expanding network of retail fuel and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) stations across the country.
Speaking on the partnership, Chief Commercial Officer of MEA Energy, Mr. Chris Vassilopoulos, said the collaboration sets a new benchmark for what he described as the “Station of the Future” in Africa, combining UAE-backed financial strength with Nigerian-driven technological innovation.
“Following an exhaustive global search for a technology partner capable of meeting the rigorous demands of the African energy market, MEA Energy identified Petrosoft’s SmartPump solution as the gold standard for automation, transparency and operational efficiency,” Vassilopoulos said.
He noted that MEA Energy operates as a fully integrated player in the downstream value chain, functioning as an importer, wholesaler, retailer and logistics provider across ocean, coastal and overland freight.
“As we scale our retail footprint, the integration of SmartPump technology will provide real-time oversight of fuel inventory, sales data and pump accuracy, ensuring that MEA Energy continues to deliver world-class service to Nigerian consumers,” he added.
According to him, the company’s broader mission is to introduce international standards of excellence into Nigeria’s downstream sector.
“By partnering with Petrosoft and deploying SmartPump technology, we are not merely acquiring software. We are investing in a transparent ecosystem that eliminates leakages, optimises our supply chain and guarantees accurate dispensing for customers at every visit,” Vassilopoulos said.
Commenting on the development, Chief Executive Officer of Petrosoft, Dr. Joshua Denila, said the adoption of SmartPump by MEA Energy signals a significant shift in how downstream operators in Africa manage high-volume retail assets.
He explained that the technology was designed to be resilient, adaptable and capable of performing in diverse operating environments, making it suitable for Nigeria’s growing energy infrastructure.
Denila highlighted key features of the SmartPump system to include advanced calibration monitoring and real-time tank gauging to prevent product losses and unauthorised siphoning; remote management capabilities that allow operators to monitor station performance, adjust prices and audit inventory through a secure cloud interface; and integrated logistics, ensuring accurate tracking of fuel volumes from depot to dispensing nozzle.
He added that the system also enhances consumer confidence through automated, tamper-proof dispensing, guaranteeing that customers receive the exact quantity paid for and strengthening brand loyalty in a competitive market.
