In a bid to enhance the morale of soldiers and officers, Major General Obinna Onubogu, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of 2 Division Nigerian Army, officially launched the inaugural 2 Division Inter-Command Secondary Schools Sports Competition on Tuesday.
The event, held at the Major General JM Inienger Sports Complex within the Adekunle Fajuyi Cantonment in Odogbo Barracks, Ojoo, Ibadan, is set to run for three days.
Major General Onubogu emphasised that the competition serves as a significant morale booster for troops deployed across various operational zones in the country. He noted that soldiers and officers with children attending Command Secondary Schools within the Division’s area of responsibility would feel reassured knowing their children are engaged in meaningful activities while they serve the nation.
The GOC highlighted that the initiative aligns with the Chief of Army Staff’s (COAS) command philosophy, which prioritises troop motivation through comprehensive training and welfare programmes. He stressed that the sports competition is a strategic approach to ensuring soldiers remain motivated and focused on their duties.
“Sports provide a platform for our children to excel, express themselves, and develop essential life skills,” Major General Onubogu stated. “For the Nigerian Army, the education and well-being of our soldiers’ children are paramount. This competition reassures our troops that their children are safe, receiving quality education, and participating in constructive activities like sports.”
He further explained that the event aims to foster unity, teamwork, and healthy competition among students from various Command Secondary Schools. “This competition is not just about winning medals; it’s about building character, resilience, and leadership skills. These qualities are crucial for personal growth and success in all aspects of life,” he added.
The GOC revealed that the idea for the competition stemmed from his visits to several Command Secondary Schools upon assuming command of the Division. Observing varying levels of commitment to sports, he resolved to revive such competitions to encourage excellence and physical fitness among students. The proposal received strong support from the Nigerian Army Education Corps (NAEC), paving the way for the 2025 edition of the event.
Major General Onubogu urged participants to embrace the values of sportsmanship, including respect, humility, and grace, regardless of the competition’s outcome. “Every race run, every point scored, and every game played contributes to your personal development. You are all champions for having the courage to compete,” he said.
He also expressed gratitude to the Chief of Army Staff for his unwavering support, as well as to the Commandant of the Nigerian Army Education Corps, organisers, coaches, parents, and volunteers for their dedication in making the event a reality.
The competition features students from Command Secondary Schools in Apata, Mokola, Shaki, Ede, Isan Ekiti, Ijebu-Ode, Akure, and the host school, Command Secondary School Odogbo. Sporting events include march past, javelin, table tennis, football, basketball, and volleyball, among others.
In his closing remarks, Major General Onubogu declared the 2 Division Inter-Command Secondary Schools Sports Competition 2025 officially open, wishing all participants a memorable and inspiring experience.
