Lookman, Atalanta could resort to legal action

Super Eagles ace Ademola Lookman has refused to attend training, leading to potential legal actions that could be taken by both Atalanta and the player, including the possibility of early termination of his contract.

The striker missed yesterday’s session at the Zingonia training ground, and reports indicate that he has since removed all his personal belongings from the camp.

Lookman’s contract with Atalanta runs until June 2027, with an option to extend until 2028. Currently, Atalanta has chosen not to take disciplinary action, but the situation cannot continue indefinitely. According to Calcio e Finanza, the club may dock Lookman’s wages if he fails to attend three consecutive training sessions, provided there are at least 48 hours between each absence. His salary with Atalanta is reportedly worth €1.8 million per season net.

However, his agent, Andrea D’Amico, has a differing perspective and warns that recent developments might grant the player the ability to sue for contract termination. “Don’t forget that after the Diarra case, he could also decide to rescind the contract, which would require Atalanta to provide compensation,” D’Amico told Radio Kiss Kiss. “The abolition of Article 17 regarding the free circulation of European citizens, since Lookman is a non-EU player, would create legal circumstances that equate EU workers with non-EU workers.”

The case referred to was initiated by Lassana Diarra and the Dutch group Justice for Players, which filed a class action suit against FIFA and football federations in Belgium, France, the Netherlands, Denmark, and Germany.
