Learning has just become easier and more interesting for students of St. George’s Boys Primary School, Ikoyi.
Within a space of three weeks, the school’s inactive Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Centre was refurbished and commissioned by the Lagos Ikoyi Lions Club.
Since then, the tradition of the past, whereby students were moved to a neighbouring school in Obalende to take computer literacy classes, has become a thing of the past.
According to Mrs. Stella Ugbodu Atanosen, president of the Lagos Ikoyi Lions Club, their initial project was to equip a library with books. But after the assessment of the need of St. George’s Boys Primary School, Ikoyi, they decided to go for ICT.
Her words: “Nigerian children should have good education, irrespective of their gender because they are the leaders of tomorrow. And as a humanitarian and service organisation, we are always told to carry out community assessment before commencement of any project.”
This legacy project by the club, it was learnt, is in fulfilment of one of the four Lions Club International Centennial challenges for youth empowerment. The ICT project was commissioned by the District Governor 404 A1, Dr. Ayodele Ajayi in the presence of AVM Anthony Okpere (Rtd.), Past District Governor, Mrs. Abosede Omobolanle Adelaja, secretary, Lagos State Basic Education Board (SUBEB) and Alhaja (Chief) Binta Fatimat Tinubu and other senior members of the Lagos Ikoyi Lions Club.
Mrs. Adelaja acknowledged the support of the Lagos Ikoyi Lions Club for quality education in Lagos State. She told Daily Sun that the Lagos State government knew the importance of education and the huge fund required to establish the ‘Save Our School Initiative’.
“The ‘Save Our School Initiative’ is a platform for donors, private organisations, non-governmental organisations and spirited individuals to partner with government to support our schools. They support through donations, like the donation of an information and communication technology centre by Lagos Ikoyi Lions Club to St. George’s Boys Primary School, classroom building, training and re-training of teachers, establishment of libraries, playground and so many infrastructural facilities in the school,” she explained.
Mrs. Stella Ananosen, the centenary president of the club, informed that the Lagos Ikoyi Lions Club was involved in other humanitarian activities, including catering to the needs of inmates of the blind people’s home, and senior citizen home, even as the club conducts free diabetics screening for patients.
