The Lagos State Task Force has arraigned two persons in court for allegedly impersonating the Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) in charge of Zone 2 Command, Onikan, Lagos, Mr. Adamu Ibrahim.
The suspects, Mohammed Aliu and Sadiku Abraham, were arraigned before Magistrate Odusanya Adepeju at the Ogba Area Magistrate’s Court on a one-count charge bordering on impersonation.
They were arrested while posing as the AIG, with the intention to cajole and deceive the police to release an unregistered Baja motorcycle impounded by the task force.
Adepeju sentenced the accused to six weeks imprisonment with option of N10,000 fine each and remanded them in prison custody.
Chairman, Lagos State Task Force, SP Olayinka Egbeyemi, disclosed that the unregistered motorcycle was impounded and the operator was subsequently charged to court for plying the Mushin-Oshodi road, one of the 475 restricted routes for motorcycles, as contained in the Lagos State Road Traffic Laws of 2012.
He also revealed that Magistrate Lateef Owolabi of the Lagos State Mobile Court at Oshodi ordered that the motorcycle be forfeited to government, while the rider (Mr. Mohammed Aliu) was sentenced to a six hours of community service after he pleaded guilty to the charge against him.
Egbeyemi said investigations revealed that it was after the rider completed the six hours community service and was subsequently released by court officials that he engaged one Sadiku, who claimed to know Mr. Adamu Ibrahim (AIG Zone 2), to assist him get his forfeited motorcycle released.
After unsuccessful attempts to convince the coordinator, Lagos State Mobile Court, Mr. Oluwafemi Alabi, through a phone call from someone who claimed to be the AIG, Aliu and Sadiku went to the Lagos State Motorcycle Dump Site at Ojota.
