Lagos-Calabar road: Winhomes subscribers assert land ownership

By Lukman Olabiyi

Subscribers to Winhomes Estate in Okun Ajah, Lagos, have moved into the property to formally take possession of their lands, insisting they are the original and bona fide owners despite past ownership disputes surrounding the estate.

The landowners, led by Chief Charles Mba under the aegis of the Association of Landowners in Winhomes Estate and supported by the Coalition of Civil Society Organisations for Good Governance, made their position known during a world press conference held on Tuesday at the estate along the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road.

Addressing journalists, the group stated that its members legitimately purchased the plots from Winhomes Estate, fulfilled all financial requirements, and were duly allocated the parcels, which many had taken possession of prior to the recent developments.

Chief Mba said the association decided to set the records straight following controversies that trailed the estate’s original ownership tussle with the Federal Government, noting that the matter had since been resolved.

He declared that the subscribers, armed with valid title documents, were formally asserting their rights over the property.

According to him, the landowners support the construction of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway and have accepted their fate regarding the forfeiture of some portion of the land, but are demanding compensation.

They described the move as a demonstration of their backing for the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

“We are in full support of the coastal highway project and have no choice than to release the affected part of our land for its construction,” he said, adding that the association is prepared to meet all statutory obligations, including land use charges and other government fees, as development begins on the remaining plots.

The group also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration for what it described as a landmark infrastructure project capable of attracting both local and diaspora investors.

The association urged the media and Nigerians to promote objective reporting of government achievements, stressing that positive coverage would enhance the country’s image and encourage further delivery of democratic dividends.

The landowners reaffirmed their readiness to commence developmental projects on the estate, signalling what observers say could mark a new phase in the protracted Winhomes property saga.
