From Paul Osuyi, Asaba

Government offices in Asaba, Delta State capital, were on Monday shut as civil servants abstained from work in total compliance with the indefinite strike embarked upon by the organised labour.

The national leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and its Trade Union Congress (TUC) had declared the indefinite strike commencing from Monday.

The sit-at-order issued by the organised labour followed the brutalisation of the president NLC, Joe Ajaero by security agents and suspected agents of Imo State Government earlier this month.

Our correspondent, who monitored the level of compliance in Asaba, observed that public primary and secondary schools were closed in different parts of the state capital.

The Federal Civil Secretariat along Okpanam Road and the Prof. Chike Edozien Secretariat for state civil servants were under lock and keys.

Other government parastatals and agencies were devoid of the usual human and vehicular traffic, as workers stayed away from their offices to register their displeasure over the manhandling of the labour leader.

However, banks and other corporate organisations opened for business.

State chairman of NLC, Goodluck Ofobruku who spoke on the development, commended workers for totally complying with the directive.

“We are fully in support of the decision of the National Executive Council of NLC that we should withdraw our services until the Federal Government meets with our demands and we are showing it by withdrawing our services as directed by the NEC of NLC and TUC,” he said.
