The Senator representing Kogi Central, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, has declared her intention to seek re-election for a second term, setting the stage for a high-stakes political contest with former Kogi State governor, Yahaya Bello, who has already signalled interest in the same seat.
Akpoti-Uduaghan made her declaration at a stakeholders’ meeting of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kogi Central on Monday, amid growing indications that the 2027 senatorial race will be a direct face-off between the incumbent lawmaker and the immediate past governor.
Bello, who governed Kogi State from 2016 to 2024, had in December 2025 formally declared his intention to contest for the Kogi Central Senatorial seat during a visit to the palace of the Ohinoyi of Ebiraland, where he met with traditional rulers and key stakeholders.
At the meeting, the former governor openly accepted calls by political leaders and constituents to run, stating, “I accept to run for the Senate in 2027,” a move widely interpreted as an effort to retain political influence after leaving office.
Against this backdrop, Akpoti-Uduaghan told party stakeholders that her decision to seek a second term followed extensive consultations and sustained pressure from constituents across the five local government areas of the district.
“After due consultations and encouragement from my lovely husband, I am here to say I have accepted your calls to re-contest for my second term as your senator,” she said.
Her declaration comes after months of endorsements from party faithful and community leaders, signalling strong grassroots backing for her re-election bid.

The lawmaker, however, used the occasion to call for unity within the PDP, urging stakeholders to close ranks ahead of the looming electoral contest.
“This is the time to bring everyone back home. We must reconcile with those who may have had one issue or another, for the betterment of our party and the success of our elections ahead,” she added.
In his remarks, the PDP Zonal Chairman for Kogi Central, Anthony Akuvada, commended the senator’s performance, describing her as a transformative leader whose interventions in infrastructure, education, and human capital development have had significant impact across the district.
He also praised her accessibility and engagement with constituents, noting that her leadership style has strengthened party cohesion.
Akpoti-Uduaghan’s first term has been marked by advocacy-driven projects and empowerment programmes targeted at women and youths, earning her support across political divides.
She also acknowledged the role of her husband, High Chief Emmanuel Oritsejolomi Otuoze Uduaghan, Alema of Warri Kingdom, describing him as a pillar of support throughout her time in office.
“My husband has been my steadfast support system, my encourager, and my strength through every challenge. I remain grateful for his belief in me and in this journey of service,” she said.
