Reports indicate that a number of communities in Katsina State deployed town criers on Saturday to mobilise voters to the polling units.

The development may not be unconnected with reported low turn out of voters even as Governor Aminu Bello Masari accused unnamed opposition political parties of engaging in vote buying during the governorship polls. He said he reported the matter to the police.

Speaking with reporters after casting his votes in his Kafur local government area, Masari described the election process as peaceful in Katsina.

According to Masari, “in my polling unit the election is going  on very well. If what is happening here also happens in other parts of the state then we are going to have peaceful elections.

“But the information I received which I have shared with the Police Commissioner is that those who accuse the APC of vote buying are the ones buying votes.

“Here in Kafur, we have recorded two or three places where they were trying to buy votes. In the APC, we don’t buy votes. Certainly, I have received the reports and confirmed at some of the polling units.

“Initially the voter turn out was poor but the reports I have received talk of increased turn out of voters.

“In some places they are even using town criers to encourage the people to come out and cast their votes because after the presidential election there is always complacency on the part of voters.

However, reacting to the allegation of vote buying, the Katsina PDP Chairman, Salisu Majigiri, described the Governor’s claim as false.
