Kenneth Okonkwo, spokesperson for the Atiku Abubakar presidential campaign, has said Peter Obi cannot defeat President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election without a broad opposition coalition.
Okonkwo, who spoke during an interview with Ibeju Upgrade Media, dismissed Obi’s chances of unseating Tinubu if he contests alone, even with former Kano State governor Rabiu Kwankwaso as his running mate.
He argued that the opposition would need to unite behind a single platform and candidate to stand a realistic chance against the incumbent.
“Coalition is the only way out. So you don’t come down with a man who has told you from the beginning that power is not taken à la carte; you fight for it, you grab it, you snatch it, you run away with it,” he said, referring to Tinubu.
Okonkwo also questioned Obi’s ability to attract sufficient support in northern Nigeria if he faces Tinubu without a wider alliance, citing the former Labour Party candidate’s performance in Kano during the 2023 presidential election.

“So, if Peter Obi goes against Tinubu alone, Tinubu will eat him like biscuits.
“Will Kano people accept Peter Obi? In 2023, when we had the opportunity, they did not accept him. In 2027, they will not accept him,” he said.
He further dismissed the expected contribution of Kwankwaso to an Obi-led ticket, claiming that the former Kano governor had also lost political ground in the state.
His comments come amid renewed efforts by opposition politicians to forge a coalition ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
